The 11 U.S.-based spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) have faced notable financial strain, with a combined net outflow of $1.2 billion over an eight-day period. Data from Bloomberg on September 9 reveals that investors withdrew approximately $1.2 billion from these ETFs between August 30 and September 6. This marks the longest stretch of outflows since these funds began trading on January 10.
The outflows correlate with Bitcoin’s price struggles in early September, which saw a drop from a high of $64,668 on August 26 to a low of $53,491 by September 7—a decline of 17.28% in just two weeks. Analysts point out that September is traditionally a challenging month for Bitcoin, a trend sometimes referred to as “Rektember.”
In the crypto world, September is often termed “Rektember,” reflecting a pattern where Bitcoin and other digital assets experience significant price corrections. This is followed by “Uptober,” a period historically associated with price recoveries. Despite Bitcoin’s recent dip, some analysts remain optimistic about its potential for recovery.
Financial adviser Suze Orman has voiced support for Bitcoin, suggesting that its long-term prospects remain strong. In a CNBC interview, Orman predicted that as younger investors gain wealth, Bitcoin will increasingly become a preferred investment, potentially driving up its value.
Despite the recent outflows, the cryptocurrency sector remains prominent in the ETF market. According to data from The ETF Store, 2024 has seen a surge in ETF launches, with the top four being spot Bitcoin ETFs. These include:
Among the top 25 ETF launches by inflows this year, 13 are related to crypto assets. Of these, 10 are Bitcoin-focused ETFs and three are Ethereum-related. Notably, the iShares Ethereum Trust ETF has emerged as a significant player, becoming the seventh-largest ETF launch of 2024 and surpassing the $1 billion mark in August.
As the cryptocurrency market continues to evolve, both the challenges and opportunities within the ETF space highlight the dynamic nature of digital asset investments.
