


Ethereum, one of the leading blockchain platforms, is gearing up to host its inaugural hackathon with a significant reward pool of $2 million. Termed as the “Attackathon,” this event aims to conduct the largest crowdsourced security audit of Ethereum’s codebase to enhance protocol robustness and security.
Scheduled to span four weeks, the “Attackathon” will challenge security researchers to actively seek vulnerabilities within Ethereum’s protocol. Hosted by the Ethereum Protocol Security (EPS) research team, participants will adhere to specific competition rules, focusing on identifying impactful vulnerabilities that comply with the set criteria for rewards.
The event will commence with a technical walkthrough of Ethereum‘s codebase to equip participants with necessary insights into potential vulnerabilities. Following the event, bug bounty platform Immunefi will consolidate the findings and compile a comprehensive report detailing discovered vulnerabilities.
The EPS team has allocated $500,000 towards the prize pool, urging sponsors to contribute an additional $1.5 million by August 1st. Future hackathons are planned to coincide with Ethereum’s hard forks, ensuring continuous scrutiny and enhancement of the protocol’s security measures.
Ethereum’s upcoming “Pectra” hard fork, slated for late 2024 or early 2025, will integrate the “Prague” and “Electra” upgrades. Notable updates include a “social recovery” feature aimed at simplifying wallet key management and introducing smart contract-like functionalities to wallets.
