The Casper Network has successfully resumed its operations following a temporary halt caused by a security breach. On July 31 at 3:18 pm UTC, a decisive move by 64 validators—representing 85% of the CSPR staked on the network—led to the resumption of validation processes.
In an update posted on X, the Casper Network confirmed its full recovery and operational status. The resolution of the security incident was achieved through a collaborative, decentralized effort involving validators, engineers, and other key stakeholders.
The Casper team detailed that the network’s pause presented significant technical hurdles, particularly because it occurred in the midst of an active era rather than at its conclusion. To mitigate the issue, two blocks containing four transactions were removed, effectively orphaning these transactions and their blockchain effects.
The resolution involved deploying a new Casper-node binary and standard configuration files. Validators were required to manually initiate the upgrade and implement the new version, a task that demanded real-time synchronization. Additionally, a new tool was developed to scan the blockchain from inception to the present, ensuring that no further exploitation had occurred.
With the validators’ approval, the nodes were restarted to eliminate the problematic blocks and apply necessary global state changes. The network was fully unpaused and block creation resumed once 66.7% or more of the consensus stake reached this threshold.
As the Casper Network returns to normal operations, WazirX—a major Indian cryptocurrency exchange—has also announced its recovery strategy following a security breach that resulted in the theft of approximately $230 million. Unlike WazirX, which initially found no evidence of compromised signer machines in its investigation of the July 18 hack, the Casper team has made notable progress in identifying the root cause of its breach.
July saw several high-profile crypto breaches beyond Casper and WazirX. Notable victims included:
Cointelegraph reached out to the Casper Network team for further details on their root cause analysis but had not received a response at the time of publication.
The Casper Network’s recovery underscores the resilience and collaborative spirit of the crypto community in the face of security threats. As the network stabilizes, ongoing efforts to enhance security and transparency will be crucial in safeguarding against future breaches.
