


Ethereum’s latest upgrade, Pectra, is set to launch on the Holesky testnet today. This upgrade is a significant milestone in Ethereum’s ongoing development, aiming to improve Ethereum’s scalability, user experience, and overall network efficiency.
Today, Ethereum’s Pectra upgrade will go live on the Holesky testnet at 9:55 pm UTC, allowing developers to test important changes before they are introduced to the Ethereum mainnet. According to the Ethereum Foundation, the upgrade will first activate on Holesky at epoch 115,968, followed by its deployment on the Sepolia testnet on March 5, 2025, at 7:29 am UTC. Once both testnets successfully complete the upgrade, Ethereum will choose an epoch for the mainnet activation.
Pectra introduces several key features designed to enhance Ethereum’s network and user experience. Among the most notable changes are:

Pectra follows the Ethereum network’s recent Dencun upgrade, which significantly reduced transaction fees for Layer-2 networks and improved the economics of Ethereum rollups. Dencun was seen as a major step toward mass adoption, and now Pectra is building on that foundation with further improvements.
One of the standout features of Pectra is EIP-3074, which enhances account abstraction on Ethereum. This change allows externally owned accounts (EOAs) to execute batch transactions and have sponsored gas payments. With gas sponsorship, users can transact without using ETH, making it easier for new users to participate in the Ethereum network.
Moreover, Pectra’s upgrade will increase the Ethereum blob capacity by 50%. Currently, Ethereum supports three blobs per block. After the Pectra upgrade, this will rise to six blobs per block, enhancing Ethereum’s ability to store and process data more efficiently.
Blobs are crucial for Layer-2 blockchains, as they allow compressed transaction data and proofs to be submitted to the mainnet. The increase in blob capacity will lower Layer-2 transaction costs, benefiting developers and users alike.
Pectra also brings a significant change for Ethereum validators. Currently, validators can deposit up to 32 ETH. With the new upgrade, the maximum balance for receiving rewards will be raised to 2,048 ETH, offering more incentives for validators to participate in securing the network.
The deployment of Pectra on the Holesky testnet is part of a broader effort by Ethereum developers to accelerate the network’s roadmap. In an All Core Devs meeting held on February 13, 2025, key Ethereum developers discussed speeding up protocol upgrades to deploy them at a faster pace.
