


Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has unveiled plans for the network’s upcoming upgrade, dubbed “The Verge.” This transformative update is designed to enhance Ethereum’s security and accessibility, allowing nodes to operate on devices as compact as smartphones and smartwatches.
One of the primary challenges facing Ethereum today is the increasing amount of data required to run a node. Current nodes need to store “hundreds of gigabytes of state data,” which poses a significant barrier to entry for many users. The Verge addresses this issue by introducing stateless verification, enabling nodes to verify blockchain blocks without the need for extensive data storage.
Buterin stated that this shift will make it so computationally feasible that “every mobile wallet, browser wallet, and even smartwatch is doing it by default.” This approach significantly lowers the technical barriers for users, including those who wish to participate in solo staking.
In his blog post, Buterin noted that The Verge will initially implement Verkle trees, a cryptographic structure that helps reduce proof sizes and facilitates stateless validation. However, he acknowledged concerns about the vulnerability of Verkle trees to quantum computing threats. He cautioned that if the current KECCAK Merkle Patricia tree is replaced with Verkle trees, it may necessitate future replacements.
As a potential solution, developers are exploring Scalable Transparent Arguments of Knowledge (STARK)-based binary hash trees, which offer better long-term security and scalability in the face of quantum challenges.
The Verge also includes proposed adjustments to the network’s gas cost system under Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP)-4762, aimed at optimizing for stateless verification. This proposal seeks to adjust gas fees for resource-intensive cryptographic operations, ensuring that Ethereum remains scalable and secure.
Buterin introduces the concept of “multidimensional gas,” which separates gas costs for call data, computation, and state accesses. This strategy is intended to enhance resource management on Ethereum as it transitions to a more streamlined infrastructure.
With these changes, Buterin aims to facilitate the operation of nodes on smaller devices, thereby making solo staking more viable and accessible for everyday users. By reducing the hardware requirements and simplifying the verification process, The Verge positions Ethereum for a more inclusive future.
