One of the primary reasons many gamers have yet to dive into Web3 games is the complex process of using cryptocurrency wallets. As the gaming landscape evolves, understanding these barriers is crucial for attracting mainstream players to blockchain-based gaming.
In collaboration with the Blockchain Game Alliance (BGA) and blockchain game data tracker PlayToEarn, the Web3 gaming protocol Elympics has released an insightful report titled “The Future of Web3 Gaming is Competitive: Global Gaming Report 2024.” This report delves into the current state of blockchain gaming and features a survey of 1,000 gamers worldwide, shedding light on their perspectives regarding Web3 games.
The survey revealed several reasons why gamers have been hesitant to engage with blockchain games:
Conversely, when asked why they play games, many respondents highlighted airdrops and the potential to earn money as significant motivators, along with the excitement of competing with others.
Elympics CEO Michal Dabrowski acknowledged the challenges Web3 gaming faces in appealing to mainstream gamers. However, he remains optimistic about a forthcoming shift in the industry. Dabrowski noted:
“The entry of infrastructure players like TON into the web3 gaming space is introducing powerful social distribution networks and highly engaged communities.”
He emphasized that as more developers transition to building within Web3, the emergence of high-quality games will likely drive greater interest.
While the complexities of crypto wallets have deterred some gamers, initiatives like The Open Network (TON) are actively working to streamline the user experience.
On April 19, Justin Hyun, director of investments at TON Foundation, shared insights on how Telegram’s Mini Apps are designed to make crypto interactions seamless and nearly unnoticeable for users. This ease of use is crucial for onboarding traditional gamers into the Web3 ecosystem.
Since then, the TON ecosystem has seen a surge in users engaging with clicker games, with projects like Hamster Kombat attracting over 300 million users, effectively bridging Telegram users into the world of Web3 gaming.
As the Web3 gaming landscape continues to evolve, addressing the barriers posed by cryptocurrency wallets and user experience is essential for attracting a broader audience. With strategic initiatives aimed at simplifying access and enhancing game quality, the potential for a thriving ecosystem of blockchain-based games is on the horizon. By fostering convenience and understanding among gamers, the future of Web3 gaming looks promising.
