Joseph Lubin Launches ‘Network State’ to Empower Personal Sovereignty in Web3 and AI Era

Joseph Lubin, the co-founder of Ethereum and founder of ConsenSys, has announced the launch of an ambitious new project aimed at advancing personal sovereignty and decentralized governance. Called Network State, the initiative seeks to provide individuals with the ability to declare their autonomy in the rapidly evolving Web3 and AI-driven global economy.

Lubin introduced the concept on Nov. 14, describing the initiative as a major step toward a “paradigm shift” that could reverberate across the globe. He pointed specifically to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) as a source of constant friction for Web3 companies, calling it a force of “gaslighting” and “carpet bombing” that has stifled innovation in the space. Lubin believes that, under such conditions, Web3 developers have been unable to engage in activities that should be a natural part of their work.

“Operating in a climate of regulatory uncertainty, with overreaching government intervention, has been detrimental to our progress,” Lubin said, referring to what he sees as a deliberate effort to slow or co-opt the advancement of the crypto and blockchain industries.

Introducing Sovs.xyz: A Platform for Self-Sovereignty

The new platform, sovs.xyz, is the core of the Network State initiative. It was launched on Linea, a zero-knowledge Ethereum Virtual Machine (zkEVM) rollup developed by ConsenSys. This layer-2 solution enhances Ethereum’s scalability while preserving its decentralization, making it a fitting choice for the launch of a platform focused on self-sovereignty and decentralized governance.

Sovs.xyz allows users to attest to different types of sovereignty that are meaningful to them. These “types of sovereignty” could range from financial autonomy to self-governance within digital communities. By allowing individuals to declare their sovereignty in a digital context, Lubin hopes to foster stronger, more sustainable, and equitable communities, which can evolve and thrive within the decentralized Web3 ecosystem.

The Network State concept appears to build on Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin’s pop-up city experiment and the broader idea of network states. Buterin has long been interested in how online communities might evolve into physical communities with a degree of political autonomy. The goal is to create decentralized, digital-first communities that have the ability to self-organize and operate outside traditional state control.

Lubin’s new platform could act as a digital incubator for this concept, providing the tools and infrastructure for communities to form and operate independently within a decentralized web. In a move to further decentralize the infrastructure supporting this new digital initiative, ConsenSys took an important step on Nov. 13 by launching a Swiss nonprofit association dedicated to advancing the governance and growth of Linea. This association will focus on the development of Linea as a decentralized platform, contributing to the long-term vision of building a fully decentralized Web3 ecosystem that supports self-sovereign communities.
